Challenge
This project was the third and last project created for Google's UX Design Certification program. Focused on creating something for social good, Jack decided to create an application focused on connecting the younger generation with events and each other. To succeed in this goal, Friendly would be created as a social media platform for the younger generation to find friends and groups with similar interests, as well as find local, online, or global events.
Timeline
Jack began by looking into what competitors are doing for their social media platforms. Jack made a list of functions to include in the application and began doing paper wireframes. After finalizing designs, he began creating digital wireframes.
After testing the user flow for his digital wireframes, Jack began making the low-fidelity prototype for Friendly. First, Jack created an in-depth sticksheet that included colors, typography, icons, and buttons to be used. He then created the new frames for Friendly based on the digital wireframes and issues found during the first round of testing. The colors and icons would also be tested to ensure accessibility.
When testing the low-fidelity prototype, users would note that aspects of Friendly seemed "busy" and that there was a lack of functionality when it came to finding events, confirming whether friend/join requests were going through, and confirming that an RSVP went through. Jack would also find that he overlooked pathways to specific parts of the app.
Jack would immediately begin fixing the problems found in the low-fidelity prototype testing. He would begin by simplifying personal, user, and group profiles, adding named sections. He then added more frames that showed progress when sending friend requests and joining groups. The last fix was related to finding events, RSVPing for events, and viewing saved or RSVP'd events.
After a final round of testing, Jack would fix minor issues related to some interactions being abrupt and inconsistent spacing. After fixing those issues, Friendly would be completed.Â
Takeaways
Of the three projects Jack has completed, he believes that this project was the most successful in all aspects. His sticker sheet was successful, his research only improved his design, and the final product functions like a social media app.
